About 1000 active satellites orbit around the Earth for mapping, improving weather forecast or keeping communication networks running. However, the continuous growth of space debris poses a serious hazard to orbital infrastructure and operations. Almost six decades of spaceflight have by now left a mass of approximately 6500 tons in orbit, posing a constant threat to manned and unmanned spaceflight. Therefore, scientists are working continuously to register, prevent and remove orbital junk and also to encourage safe as well as sustainable spaceflight.
To provide a platform for interdisciplinary discussions Munich Aerospace has invited an international array of scientists and professionals to the this year's summer school.
